what are extensive and intensive properties

OpenStudy (zpupster):

they are physical properties __ intensive are properties like hardness or temperature - If the system is divided the temperature of each subsystem is identical or if you cut a diamond it retains its hardness. conversely, extensive properties is proportional to the amount of material in the system. For example, both the mass and the volume of a diamond are directly proportional to the amount that is left after cutting it from the raw mineral. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intensive_and_extensive_properties

Intensive property - is variables that do not depend on the amount such as temperature, pressure, concentration and density whereas extensive property are variables that depend on the amount such as volume, energy , heat capacity, enthalpy, entropy, lengt and mass..
