what is the electronic geometry of CCl4

OpenStudy (aaronq):

approaching these problems requires you to draw lewis diagrams and then use VSEPR to figure out it's geometry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add up the electrons: (4 + 7*4)= 36 or (8*4) so there are no lone pairs. At this point it would be useful to draw a Lewis Diagram like @aaronq said. Since there are 4 bonding elements and no lone pairs, it must be tetrahedral. Please let me know if this makes sense!

4 bonds, no lone pair= sp^3 hybridization and the geometry would be tetrahedral! Hope that helps
