Help me understand how ClO3 has a 1- charge?

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

@aaronq

OpenStudy (aaronq):

Cl has a +5 charge

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

I just do not understand this.

OpenStudy (amtran_bus):

How do you determine whether S has -1 or +5 ? @aaronq

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ClO3 is a polyatomic ion. There is a list of common polyatomic ions you should learn, it comes with the charge. http://chemistry.about.com/od/chartstables/tp/common-polyatomic-ions.htm

I know I need to memorize them, but I want to know how they get them in the first place.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know about that. I know how to find the individual oxidation states in redox reaction but I'm not sure if that's what you meant by finding out the charge of S. If you want to find out the charge of S (sulfur) just look at the periodic table. Its a 2-. Its charge is dependent on its location on the PT.
