can you explain oxidation numbers to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

friend just try to remember the word "LEOGER" here L=less, E=electron, O=oxidation, G=greater, R=reduction. ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im sorry, that looks like a good mnemonic device, but i don't understand the concept of oxidation, so it doesn't help me much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so here it goes , friend when writing equation ; if the molecule have less oxidation number(I think you know it) than in reactant then it goes oxidation where as if the oxidation number is greater in product than in reactant then it undergoes reduction ie "LEOGER" got it

ok. thanks. this was very helpful.
