what is the oxidation state of P in H3PO4?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We know that hydrogen has an oxidation state of +1 and oxygen has an oxidation state of -2. If we sum all the oxidation states in the molecule, we get\[3(1) + 1(x) + 4(-2) = 0\]x will be the oxidation state of P
