what is buffer solution , how does it stop the change in pH of the solution?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A buffer solution is usually used to maintain the pH (the negative log base 10 of [H+], the hydrogen ion concentration) of the solution. A buffered solution usually contains a weak organic acid, which can accept and donate protons in response to increased or decreased [H+], ([ ] means concentration.) and thus resists pH change to a limited extent.
