Is o-toluic acid soluble in ether, NaOH?, Is Napthalene soluble in NaOH?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Look at the molecules alternatively you can look up their MSDS sheets

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

Think about intermolecular interactions (their polarity)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I looked at their MSDS sheets but those only told me about their solubility in water. From knowledge on polarity, I think naphthalene is insolube in NaOH while o-toluic acic is soluble. Am I right?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

You are right about Naphthalene You are likely right about NaOH and o-toluic acid as it will likely form a salt of o-toluic acid which is much more polar than its conjugate acid

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

similar to sodium benzoate and benzoic acid

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok. That makes sense. I know ether is slightly polar, so would o-toluic acid be slightly soluble in it?

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

I would imagine o-toluic acid would be soluble in it

OpenStudy (australopithecus):

ether that is
