A 0.50kg wooden block is placed on top of a 1.0 kg wooden block. the coefficient of static friction between the two blocks is 0.35, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the lower block and the level table is 0.20. What is the maximum horizontal force that can be applied to the lower block without the upper block slipping?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

draw a free body diagram to start off

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thats good enough

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now find the force due to friction between the two blocks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 0.5*0.35*9.8 = 1.715 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now use f=ma to determine the acceleration of the upper block when 1.75N of force is applied to it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

remember you only want the acceleration of the upper block, so only use the mass of the upper block

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.75 = 0.5a, a = 3.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how is the 1.75N part related to the question...? is it just a random number?
