which of the following correctly identifies the compostition of an oxygen atom

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What are the choices?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 protons 8 neutrons 8 electrons 6 protons 6 neutrons 6 electrons 8 protons 7 neutrons 6 electrons 6 protons 12 neutrons 6 electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's the first one because the atomic mass for oxygen is 15.9994 (rounded off is 16). In order to get the atomic mass, the protons must be added to the neutrons. Therefore the answer is the first one because 8 protons plus 8 neutrons equal 16, which is the atomic mass. Also, the electrons is the same amount of the protons.

The others would be wrong because they don't add up to 15.9994, or 16.

You're welcome, can I get a metal?...just asking, you don't have to give me one! :)
