OpenStudy (anonymous):

Help please. 30.0 g of iron filings at a temperature of 80.0 C are mixed with 40.0 g of water at a temperature of 22.0 C in a Styrofoam cup. The resulting temperature of the mixture is 26.28 C. Calculate the specific heat of the iron.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Specifc heat = q/(mΔT) where specific heat of water is 4.180 J/(gC). Calculate the energy taken in by the water, and the same magnitude of energy is lost from the iron.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

I think the Styrofoam cup indicates no heat lost to the surroundings.
