The area of a larger square is 16 times the area of a smaller square. How many times as long is the base of the larger square than the base of the smaller square?

The two squares are similar. Therefore, the ratio of the areas of the two squares is the square of the ratio of the sides. 16/1 = (base ratios)²
4 times becuase if two sides are in a raio of a:b, their areas is in the ratio of a^2:b^2 You are given the ratio of the areas is 16:1, so the sides are in the ratio of sqrt(16): sqrt(1), or 4:1
Solving this 16/1 = (base ratios)² for the base ratio gives a ratio of 4 to 1 from larger square base to the smaller.
