can someone please help me?
would it be 13?
Yes.
plug in -4 into the x value(s) of the equation the absolute value of -?? Is +?? (2*4)+5=8+5=13
yup. global max at x=5. If you're interested in what the graph looks like check this out
Yes, That would be a shift of the |x| graph 1 unit to the left. The range remains all reals >= 0
I'm so confused about this one!
You have to understand the nature of graph shifting for this one. I'm not quite sure how to explain it without spoonfeeding. |x|-5 would push the |x| graph 5 units down |x+1| would push the |x| graph 1 unit left -|x-4| would push it 4 units left
errr -|x-4| would push it 4 units right*
is that exactly how it's worded? I can't see -6 fitting any condition here
the last one is supposed to be x^2 if x > -6
I meant the conditions. Are they all < and >? No >=?
yes, what do you mean? like if any of them have a line under?
Yeah. You understand why -6 is not < -6, right? -6 is also not < -7
yup, i understand that. but would my answer be correct?
No. The question is logically wrong. There literally is no answer. I'm not sure what to say. -6 doesn't fit any of the given conditions :V
ermmmm
may i interject?
please do. If you embarrass me do it politely while I go hide in a corner
apparently less than or equal to is treated as less than
similarly, greater than or equal to is treated as greater than
oooooooh. I guess it's safe to assume 21 if -7 < x < -6 meant less than?
yes
so what it would it become?
21. Technology man...
so it would fall under the piecewise-defined function of -7<x<-6
I would need further clarification on this one with the other math peeps in here or a professor. I am reading and learning proofs (for improvement in math knowledge) and I am finding out some stuff that never occurred in any of my lessons before.
that's an inverse function now…
Is skeletor jesus invading my territory?
no. you can continue and you're doing a wonderful job btw
You can continue with this problem if you'd like. I just don't think the whole advanced math proofs will come into relevancy to OP.
would my answer be correct or not?
you shouldn't rely on us telling you if you're right or wrong. we can give you some clarifications on concepts, but the rest of the work has to be done by you @adrianajones my system of helping does not involve solving or showing you the solution to your problem, but providing a problem of the same conceptual weight and show you how to break them down into something more comprehensible. of course, I might break this self-imposed rule once in a while but it would depend on the situation.
well i asked if my answer was right or wrong? that's all i wanted to know. otherwise i know i will have to work on that concept.
is there any reason you doubt your answer?
show me your solution
@skullpatrol is about to shed some light, his method of helping might be more lenient or favorable to you.
@nincompoop please continue :)
