Remember that the atomic number increases by 1 each time you move right 1 square or from the end of one row to the beginning if the next. Valence electrons are the electrons in the outer shell, and each new shell starts at the beginning of the row. Beryllium has 2 valence electrons, Sodium has 1 valence electron, Carbon has 4 valence electrons. The columns are called groups; lements in the same group generally resemble each other.
