balance the equation: Na+H2O.....NaOH+H2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that the Na is fine, but how do i get H to equal 3 molecules on the left side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oxygen in fine, too.

OpenStudy (adamconner):

well sometimes when you add things the won't be fine anymore. you just have to play with it, eventually u will get used to it

OpenStudy (adamconner):

so for this one if i told you to put a 2 in front of H2O could you do it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Na+2H2O.......NaOH+H2 but now hydrogen equals 4 on the left, and 3 on the right.

OpenStudy (adamconner):

yes so you want to add something to the NaOH

OpenStudy (adamconner):

let me help you out a little. Na +2H2O=2NaOH+H2 is that balanced now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Na+2H2O........2NaOH+H2 no, because now there are 2 Na molecules on the right, and 1 on the left

OpenStudy (adamconner):

ok, so how would you fix that?

OpenStudy (adamconner):

since you have 1 Na on the left and 2 Na on the right you can easily just add a 2 to Na

OpenStudy (anonymous):

of course! so: 2Na+2H2O.........2NaOH+H2

OpenStudy (adamconner):

yes! exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!!!!

OpenStudy (adamconner):

your welcome!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

think of H2O as HOH and look at it by seeing a hydrogen and an hydroxide and it well help you understand it better

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the balanced equation is 2Na +2HOH-->2NaOH+H2 or 2Na + 2H2O--> 2NaOH+H2
