use the following information t o calculate the average atomic mass of an element. Two isotopes are known: Isotope A has a mass of 35.01 amu and isotope B has a mass of 37.01 amu. The relative abundance are 75.4% and 24.6% respectively. Which element do you think it is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Average is 36.01 amu.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add mass of A and mass of B. Then divide by 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The element is chlorine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank you that's what i got too!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah since the lower mass is more abundant then the number will be smaller like 36.45. The actual amu of chlirine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup that's what i got.
