1) What are the main elements of Japanese bushido? 2) What are the main elements of European chivalry? 3) Which of the elements of bushido and chivalry would work well for a code of chivalry in today’s world? Explain. Thanks so much for the help. :D
1.) The main elements of Japanese bushido are having courage in battle, loyalty to shogun or daimyo, kindness, proper education, and supporting the arts. 2.) The main elements of European chivalry are having courage in battle, loyalty to lords, generosity to feeble, champion a lady, and defend the church. 3.) The elements from Japanese bushido and European chivalry that would work well in todays world include; having courage, being loyal to each other, having a proper education, defending someone when they need it, showing kindness to others, and being generous. These would work well today because they are all things that are just good to do, that everyone should already be doing because it is the polite and proper thing to do.
Bushido was the Samurai's Code of Conduct, it was like a vow that you agreed upon if you were a Samurai. Just like in Europe the Code of Chivalry was formed so that knights would know how to act justly and fight for the right reasons (prevented lawlessness). It gave them rules to abide by. A form of Buddhism (Zen) was practiced in Bushido, it taught Samurais discipline, self-awareness, self-control.. it made them strong fighters that fought out of loyalty. For European chivalry, it was in the Middle Ages when the Church took part of acting as a government to try to keep everything together and bring peace.. they made knights keep their faith, and gave them many other rules to follow such as protecting the defenseless, defending the church (Peace of God, Truce of God) etc. Both Bushido and Knight's Code of Chivalry have in common the conduct it brought them, they both shaped the warriors/knights to be brave and courageous but also to remember the laws they were confined to, to only do what was right. And in today's world, chivalry is necessary. People are going to need others to carry out chivalrous duties sometimes. Hope this helps : )
They were mainly just rules and beliefs given for them to abide by, and it just shaped them differently.. Knights ended up having more of a religious chivalry due to the Church setting most rules for them, so every time they carried out a duty they were probably doing it because 'God willed it'. And a lot of Samurais followed Zen Buddhism which might have influenced them differently.
