I have the answers to the question, but I was wondering if someone could explain it since I don't understand the reasoning behind it.

So first off Tachi, explain what a derivative really is. Once you understand this, it should hopefully "click". I'll help you along, take a guess if you don't know! =D

a derivative is the tangent line of a point on the graph i believe?

Close, it's not a tangent line, it's the slope of a tangent line at that point. So for instance, if you have: y=mx+b the slope is m everywhere, but on y=x^2 the slope changes. So going back to this, if you graph: y=x you get a line like this: |dw:1383499189009:dw| and if you graph y=-x you get|dw:1383499205128:dw| or if you graph this: y=0 |dw:1383499226843:dw| So now you see how these are all y=mx+b with b=0 in all cases and with a slope of +1, -1, and 0. So if you see this graph y=x^2 , you can see: |dw:1383499273266:dw|
