Which of the following is a polynomial? A. f(x)=4x^3-13x^2+5x B. f(x)=(4/x)-11x^2 C. f(x)=5x^3+7x^4-(1/2x) D. f(x)=-3x^4+8x^2-2√x+1
B BECAUSE OF THE EQUATION DIVIDED INTO 2 PARTS
you only want x to positive powers. no square root of x, no divide by x
@phi so then B would be out of the question since it is divided by X?
yes, B is not a polynomial neither is C if that last term is \( -\frac{1}{2x}\)
I don't know if this helps, but these are the terms! :) @phi
in that case ½ x is ok. notice that other choices use x in a "wrong" way. choice A has 5^x the last has sqr(x). B has a divide by x
So A is a monomial and not a polynomial which means that choice C would be a polynomial?
@phi
A is not a monomial ( mono is Greek for single or one) poly is Greek for "many" A is not a polynomial because it has \(5^x\) notice that x is used in a "wrong" way ....
you only want to see \( x^n \) where n is a positive number (or zero, which makes x^0 = 1)
OH I thought it was meant to be 5x, I see what you mean now, though! So C would be a polynomial becasue A used the x incorrectly, B is using x to divide and D is using x in a square root?
you got it.
of course, when I say used x incorrectly, I mean only in the sense that you don't have a polynomial. there is nothing wrong with writing f(x)= 1/x But it is not a polynomial.
Thank you so much!! :)
Ur welcome I told you that it was c f(x)=5x^3+7x^4-(1/2x)
Yes, I just wanted to know what made it C, thank you @ste310203
