how to find n factor of a compund in a redox reaction

OpenStudy (zpupster):

n factor = no of atoms * change in oxidation no for example. 2 Na2S2O3 + I2 --> Na2S4O6 + 2 NaI For this reaction, oxidation state for 1 atom of Sulphur on the left side is +2 (can be easily calculated) and on the right hand side of the equation, it is 2.5. So difference is 0.5 and we want to calculate equivalent weight of sulphur compound on the left hand side, the valence (n) factor = no of atoms * change in oxidation no. = 2 * 0.5 = 1
