Which of the following are likely to form a covalent bond? - gold and gold oxygen and oxygen magnesium and oxygen magnesium and gold

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Firstly, you need to know what covalent bonding means, which is basically the sharing of electrons between atoms! Now, which of these atoms you listed above do \(you\) think share a pair of e\(^-\)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oxygen is a diatomic element which means it comes in pairs of 2 all the time so oxygen and oxygen is out of the picture. gold and gold is not a diatomic elemenrt so gold mixed with gold is not a bond so that out of the picture to. Magnesium and oxygen are an Ionic bond because Magnesium gives up its electrons to the oxygen atom. Magnesium and gold are both positive atoms so that would not be the answer either. All of the answers look wrong to me but your best choice would be O2 or the Oxygen and Oxygen because they both are non metals that share electrons to from their bond
