Questions about this molecule.
1.) polar or non-polar? (pls explain step by step how did distinguish it) 2.) how many lone pair of electrons are there? (from which atoms) 3.) is cis-trans isomerism possible? if so draw the isomer. 4.) Give the hybridization of C(a) C(b) and O(a) atoms in the molecule. 5.) Give approximate bond angles of 1,2,3
1) I would say polar, because I can find 3 alcohol groups. They contribute lots of polarity. 2) The only atoms in this molecule that have lone pairs are oxygens. They all have 2 lone pairs of electrons when they're neutral charge, so 6 lone pairs total. 3) The middle carbon double bond can either be cis of trans. Hard to describe... 4) C(a) = sp2, C(b) = sp2, O(a) = sp3 5) 120, 120, 109.5
For 1), I meant relatively polar, compared to most organic compounds. In the grand scheme of things, I would say it's non-polar, however.
