Radical functions help!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can model the population of a certain city between the years of 1965 and 1995 by the radical function \[p(x)=75000\sqrt[3]{x-1940}\] Using this model, in what year was the population of that city 245,000?

OpenStudy (ranga):

Substitute p(x) = 245,000 on the left and solve for x.

OpenStudy (ranga):

245,000 = 75000 * cube root(x - 1940) 245000 = 75000 * (x - 1940)^1/3 divide both sides by 75000 cube both sides solve for x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, so @ranga what would it be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 34.86 but that's not a year...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jbouch

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you got 34.86 = x -1940 so x= 1974.86 so the year is 1974

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thank you!!!
