Why do atoms have no electric charge even though most of their particles have charges?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The reason that atoms have no electric charge, although most of their particles do is because the negative particles (electrons) are balanced by the positive particles (protons).

JAispuro42 is right

@jjadams. The net charge is zero. Let's take oxygen for example, its neutral under normal conditions, it has 8 electrons and also 8 protons. Electrons are -ve , protons are +ve, so -8+8=0. That's it.
