1. Draw electron-dot diagrams for the following atoms: nitrogen(N), hydrogen(H), oxygen(O), and carbon(C) I really need help please!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to find the number of electrons that each element has?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are they on the periodic table?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pretty much. The atomic number that relates to them is based on their number of protons which also equals to the number of electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So its the number of electrons?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that's what a "electron" - dot diagram is supposed to represent, the number of electrons. However, they are specifically configured in a certain manner. Look up the diagram online and see what it should look like.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For nitrogen it had 2 dots on top one on each side and one on the bottom is that right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. The thing about electrons is that they wish to fill up the lower energy levels first before occupying one that already has one in it. When you draw the diagrams, spread the electrons evenly among the 4 sides. Once you have filled up all four sides, then you can add the 2nd one to each side.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Remember that each side can only hold about two electrons, in an electron -dot diagram

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There weren't any energy levels in the picture? it was just a circle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Maybe I chose the wrong words by saying "Energy levels" more like compartments. You should be able to find out the number of electrons that each element has from the periodic table and then draw the diagram for each with the rules I have laid out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So in the middle do I just write the name of the element like N?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes. You need to specify which element your trying to draw the electron dot diagram for to make it easier for the reader to see.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thank you!
