Please Explain this. A compound contains 3 atoms of carbon and 8 atoms of hydrogen. It is combined in a reaction with oxygen molecules. The result is two end products of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water. Which element do we not need to be concerned about in balancing this equation? oxygen hydrogen sulfur carbon

@ash2326

OpenStudy (ash2326):

can you write the equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll try.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

ok,

|dw:1384964357919:dw|

OpenStudy (ash2326):

you can write for the compound \[C_3H_8\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thanx.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

now try to complete the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you explain the steps please?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

okay, so it says the compound reacts with molecules of Oxygen, notice that molecule is plural, so more than one molecule of oxygen. Now we know that oxygen's chemical symbols is O but oxygen molecule or the gas we breath is O2 so the reactants should be \[C_3H_8+xO_2\] now I have mentioned x as we don't know the no. of molecules as of now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer would be Sulfur?

OpenStudy (ash2326):

We are balancing the equation, do you know what is that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really. I forgot honestly. Haha, sorry.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Ok, I'll explain with an analogy, suppose you have 5 oranges and 6 apples, you don't cut them and mix them in a container. In the mixture how many oranges and apples are there?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5 and 6

OpenStudy (ash2326):

ok, are there any bananas in the mixture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No.

OpenStudy (ash2326):

so do you think sulphur can be the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because its asking what we don't need to be concerned about. And since there's no bananas in here. lol

OpenStudy (ash2326):

yes, you're right because it's not in the reactants,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay! Thanks!

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Welcome :)
