which of the following pairs does not share the same empirical formula? a) C2H6 & C4H12 b) C3H6O3 & CH20 C) C3H80 & CH20 D)C2H8 & CH4

OpenStudy (preetha):

Kelley what is your understanding of Empirical formula?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont really get it

OpenStudy (preetha):

Kelley, Empirical formula is derived from experiments (=empirical). They are the smallest simplest ratio of elements in a compound. So If you have C2H4 the empirical formula is CH2. or CH2 x 2 = C2H4. Write the empirical formulae of each of the molecules in the pair: C2H6 empirical formula is CH3, and C4H12, EF is also CH3. Got it? Next one?

Yes i have 2 more questions i need help with :)

A compound made of two elements irdium(Ir) & Oxygen (O), was produced in a lab by heating iridium while exposed to air. the following data was collected mass of crucible: 38.26 mass of crucible and iridum: 39.52 mass of crucible and iridum oxide: 39.73

show or explian calculations as you determine the empirical formula of the compound
