Why does acetone have a lower boiling point than hexane

OpenStudy (abb0t):

Hexane is much larger than acetone, meaning there are much more instantaneous dipole moments. teh dispersion forces are far stronger. These IMFs create stronger bonds between the molecules, which takes more energy to change from liquid to gas and also to break them apart. Visualize a pair of headphones. If you leave them in a small box and shake them, they will likely get tangled and really really complicated and you will take more time to untangle them. But, if you have a small item, like maybe lego's or something, they may not get as tangled, but you have the likelihood that some lego's might also get mixed together and such.
