Heights of men on a baseball team have a bell shaped distribution with a mean of 174cm and a standard deviation of 9cm. Using the empirical rule, what is the approx. percentage of the men between the following values? a) % of men between 165cm and 183cm b) % of men between 156cm and 192cm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

based on this website.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normal_distribution the empirical rule is 68%-95%-99.7%...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i started reading the same page as well

OpenStudy (anonymous):

68%/2 = 34% for u=174cm +/- 9cm or 165cm to 183cm 95%/2 = 47.5% for u=174cm +/- 2(9cm) or 156cm to 192cm 99.7%/2 = 49.85% for u=174cm +/- 3(9cm) or 147cm to 201cm this might help you solve the problem....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think you have here your ranges of height...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it 34% and 47.5% or is there something else I have to do here

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i should say 68% for 165cm to 183cm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because it is a range of height from the mean of 174cm to +/- 9cm of standard deviation...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...i really have no idea, this is my first stats class and Im only a week into it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the bell shape distribution is a normal distribution...
