how does a covalent bond help an unstable atom become stable

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Unstable atom will share their electrons which then eventually lead to the formation of covalent bond. Ie: oxygen atom by itself is unstable but if it shared its electrons with another oxygen atom, then the product, oxygen molecule is much more stable than the atom itself.
