Explain why the substances: NaCl, NaBr, and NaI are soluble in water, but not soluble in hexane, with respect to their polarity?? Explain why the substances: Cl2, Br2, and I2 aren't soluble in water, but are soluble in hexane, with respect to their polarity??

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Polar dissolves polar, otherwise not.

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

NaCl NaBr and NaI are ionic compounds, so they dissolve in water which is ionic and polar. Cl2, Br2 and I2 are covalent compounds, so they dissolve in hexane which is also covalent.
