Can someone help me come up with an equation that has a negative discriminant?

How do you know that they will turn out negative? I have a hard time with these kind of questions all the time! Is there a trick or something?

well I simply made each coefficient positive.... 

or you can have a and c negative... 

then made the constant c a prime number... 

and check that the coefficient b isn't the sum of the of c... and is small
