Can someone help me come up with an equation that has a negative discriminant?

b^2 -4ac

sure try x^2 + x + 11

And an equation in this format: ax^2 + bx + c

or 2x^2 + x + 11 (1)^2 - 4*2+11 = -87

oops (1)^2 - 4*2*11 = -87

How do you know that they will turn out negative? I have a hard time with these kind of questions all the time! Is there a trick or something?

well I simply made each coefficient positive.... or you can have a and c negative... then made the constant c a prime number... and check that the coefficient b isn't the sum of the of c... and is small
