Considering the following precipitation reaction: Pb(NO3)2(aq) + 2KI(aq) → PbI2(s) + 2KNO3(aq) Which ion would NOT be present in the complete ionic equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[K^{+}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since in the reaction that ion is in aqueous solution and in product the ion is still in aqueous form and the charges when present in the reactant and product remain the same. Thus they cancel out and won't be found in the ionic equation anymore.

OpenStudy (kc_kennylau):

Can you please tell me what is the ion equation of that? I wanna learn something too :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh my apologies i missed out that \[NO_{3}^{-}\] should also be removed :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Pb ^{2+}(aq)+2I ^{-}(aq)-->PbI _{2}(s)+ 2K ^{+}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Since\[PbI_{2}\] is a solid it does not dissociate into ions and remains as a solid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Note that those being removed from the original equation NO3 and K are known as Spectator Ions

thanks :D
