If the length of a rectangle is increased by 20% and the width is decreased by 20%, then the area

OpenStudy (praxer):

new length is l+20% x l new breadth is b-20% x b can u proceed now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is what I would do. EXAMPLE initial length = 10 initial width = 100 initial area = 1000 new length = 12 new width = 120 new area = 1440 440/1000 = .44, so the area increases by 44%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A = (1.2L)(0.8W) = 0.96LW so the area is decreased by 4%

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@tangytaylor, the width is decreased

OpenStudy (praxer):

i agree

@xxferrocixx you are correct. sorry about that. also, i enjoy your explanation much better than mine.
