What happens when i add distilled water to this concentration: Fe(3+)(aq)+SCN(-)(aq)<->FeSCN(2+)(aq)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you mean, which direction does that tip the reaction toward?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would the concentration be affected by the addition of distilled water.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, I think that's a yes... hmn. Let's see if I can't figure out a mechanism here...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because SCN- is a weak acid (pKa of 1.1) it is a stronger acid than water, and thus a weaker base. This means that water would be more likely to react with the Fe3+ than the SCN- would.

So what does that mean for this equation, do you think?
