The chemical formula for the compound strontium sulfide, which contains Sr2+ and S2- ions, is ______.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

the point is to make the compound neutral by balancing the charges

Can you help me out? I'm doing a study guide.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

so, strontium is a cation with a charge 2+ charge \((Sr^{2+})\), sulphide is an anion and it's charge is 2- \((S^{2-})\), how many of each do you need to make the charge zero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm sorry. I will probably never understand this.

OpenStudy (aaronq):

one has a 2+ charge, the other has a 2-, Add them up: (2)+(-2)=0 so you need one of each, so the formula is \(SrS\).
