Which explains why this might be? The objects probably have different surface areas. The objects probably have different densities. In general, cubes float better than spheres because they are flatter.

B They have different densities. Surface area does not matter, imagine putting a star shaped object in the bucket of the same material. It will sink too. Flatter surfaces could have higher buoyant force, but the cube will move around and not stay stable.

The buoyant force is directly proportional to the amount of water displaced, thus the correct answer is number 3, because it displaces the most water. This does not mean however that it is the most buoyant or that it is the lightest or less dense etc. All this means is that the buoyant force exerted by the water is the greatest. It may well be the case that case A is a floating chunk of ice which displaces 5.4 ml of water whereas case 3 is a cannon ball which sinks and displaces 7.8ml of water, the cannon ball may not be as buoyant as the ice but it has the highest buoyant force.
