Which of the following is a combustion reaction? a 2H2O 2H2 + O2 b 2AgNO3 + H2S yields Ag2S + 2NHO3 c CH4 + 2O2 yields CO2 + 2H2O d 2Al + N2 yields 2AlN

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Tell me what you know about combustion. Like, what does it use and what does it produce?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know alitle about combustion engines but not much about combustion in chem

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Well, do you at least know that fires require oxygen?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes other wise it would go out

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

And they usually give out carbon dioxide. Can you see what the answer is now?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

This should help you understand better: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combustion

OpenStudy (anonymous):

c right?

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

Yup. The usual products are CO2 and water. And it requires oxygen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (wolfe8):

You're welcome and welcome to OpenStudy

OpenStudy (asib1214):

Wolfe is right, when it comes to combustion reactions always look for Oxygen O2 in your reactants because you need plentiful of oxygen supply to make a complete combustion reaction and it will always be a separate reactant...and not in a compound for example SO2 or SO4.... because a compound can't produce enough oxygen to make a combustion reaction... i hope you caught my drift!!!! :PpPP

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks guys i really appreciate the help

OpenStudy (aaronq):

lol "combustion in engines" and "combustion in chem" is very much the same thing.. it's actually easier to understand.
