burning fossil fuels..... when you burn fossil fuels, you basically release green house gases in the atmosphere which are CO2, SO3 etc and sun is not the main cause of global warming, only a short percentage of safe sun rays touches the earth surface..clouds and layers of atmosphere filters out the harmful sun rays. its actually over burning fossil fuels, because the gases that are released in the form of heat and energy have absolutely no way to escape the earth's atmosphere, so it stays in the upper layers until it reacts with something and precipitate back to the surface of the earth, mostly in a harmful compound. Mercury for example can stay in our atmosphere for 2 years until it reacts with BrO. When they both react, Mercury(II) comes back to the surface and cause mercury poisoning. Therefore it's Fossil fuels.

the sun is not the main cause of global warming , but it is the increase in greenhouse gases concentration which are being pumped into the atmosphere by human activity like burning fossil fuels. However the question is about the ultimate source of heat which should be the sun since it is the ultimate source of radiations. The visible light from the sun is absorbed by the earth which gets heated up and inturn releases infra red radiations of longer wavelength. These longer wavelength infra red radiations instead of escaping the earths atmosphere are absorbed by the blanket of greenhouse gases leading to their entrapment within the earths atmosphere thus leading to global warming.

Dear brother, Before "global warming" started 18,000 years ago most of the earth was a frozen and arid wasteland. Over half of earth 's surface was covered by glaciers or extreme desert. Forests were rare. When humans came to existence, those who used to live closer to the poles or even away from the poles started to burn wood, coal etc to utilize thermal energy for a number of reasons (cooking, heating, and possibly for protection). Since then we have been blindly emitting harmful gases into the atmosphere and just a century ago we figured out that these harmful gases that we emit condense as it gains altitude because temperature in the upper layers of the atmosphere is extremely cold and therefore exposed to more harmful sun rays which works as a catalyst to make slow reactions of dangerous compounds, and yes you are right infra radiation is absorbed by particles of these green house gases which leads to global warming. But what if we bring down the emission of green house gases down to zero%. The earth will start to get colder again just like back in the days during the dinosaur's age, when poles used to get colder and the world was experiencing something called Global Dimming which is an opposite of global warming.
