Does anyone know the formula for oxide?

OpenStudy (nikato):

its \[O _{2}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\(2O^-\) oxide ion.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@nikato isn't that oxygen gas?

OpenStudy (nikato):

Well, there's actually no formula for oxygen it's just a name for oxygen when combined with something else

OpenStudy (nikato):

I meant *oxide

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oxide refers to an ion right? @nikato

OpenStudy (vincent-lyon.fr):

the oxide ion is \(O^{2-}\) It will form ionic compounds with cations such as: \(Mg^{2+}\) -> \(MgO\) \(Na^{+}\) -> \(Na_2O\) \(Al^{3+}\) -> \(Al_2O_3\)
