I GIVE MEDALS. A train rolls past a stationary observer. To him, the train is moving at a speed of 25 m/s west, and a woman on the train is moving at a speed of 24.6 m/s west. How long does it take the woman to move 4 m relative to the train? A. 10 s B. 9.0 s C. 7.1 s D. 8.4 s

OpenStudy (anonymous):

velocity of woman relative to train = velocity of woman-velocity of train so velocity of woman relative to train = 24.6-25.0=-0.4 m/s. (- sign indicates that woman walked opposite to the direction of train) so the time taken will be equal to = distance (4m)/velocity (0.4)= 10 s. so the answer is 10 seconds.
