how are ionic and covalent bonds similar?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well ionic bonds and \(some\) covalent bonds are polar. Ionic bonds are extreme polar. This is because the non-metal will posses significant electronegativity in contrast to the metal. This leads to electrons moving towards the non-metal and being grasped by it, making the metal lose elctrons. With some covalent bonds, both atoms should have somekind of difference in electronegativity- like hydrogen and chlorine. Even though atoms while share electrons, the electrons will stay in the electon cloud more for the more electronegative atom, in this case chlorine. In ionic bonding there is no sharing- no slight charges at the dipole HCL in this case, the is complete charge.

both types of bonds result in joining two or more atoms together. the way of joining is different. Covalent bonds are formed when bonding electrons are shared, ionic bonds are formed when the electrons are transferred from one atom to the other.
