How many neutrons are in the following: a. ^35 17CI B. ^19 9F

OpenStudy (anonymous):

neutrons= mass number-atomic number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

BUT WHATS THE 35 AND 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is there any other info available or is that all that is given?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THATS ALL AND IT SAYS (SHOW WORK)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think 35 and 19 represent the mass number and the 17 and 9 represent the protons.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isotopes_of_chlorine SAYS THAT IS 18 NEUTRONS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then just look at the values for mass on the periodic table for elements Cl F

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you are given all the info you need in the problem stated. your atomic numbers are 9 and 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and 35 and 19 are the atomic mass. so like the wikipedia article said Cl has 18 neutrons because you subtract the atomic mass by atomic number. in other words 35- 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AND SO FOR THE OTHER ONE IS 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

RIGHT

OpenStudy (anonymous):

exactly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANKS

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem
