This has to do with the definition of energy of a system. ΔK+ΔU+ΔE_internal=Q+W Since 12 Joules of heat were added Q=12J and 8 Joules went to work, you need to balance the equation. Therefore the remaining 4 J are added to internal energy.

OpenStudy (lastdaywork):

A small piece of advice - As the formula of work is different in physics and chemistry (negation of each other); go by physical definition instead of numerical analysis.
