What happens to an isotope when it emits a beta particle relative to its atomic number and atomic mass number?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

well the beta particle is like an electron, for a nucleus to emit a beta particle , a neutron must turn into an electron, and by conservation of mass and charge, the particle left in the nucleus is a proton, so what is the net change?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

remember that atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus, and atomic mass is the total number of nucleons (protons+neutrons )

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

any questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no that is all. thank you for your help! :)

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

So what is the net change in atomic number? and what is the net change in atomic mass?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh i dont know.... thats all the question says.
