which of the following processes would you predict to have positive value ^S reaction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 2SO2(g)+02(g) ->2 S03(g) B. P4010(s)+6H2O(I) ->4H3PO4(s) C. 2POCl3(g) -> 2PCl3(g)+02(g) D.2H2(g)+

OpenStudy (anonymous):

D. 2H2(g)+02(g)-> 2H20(I)

@orion92898

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no idea!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry it is much to confusing!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol its okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

good luck to you braving the harshness of that question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lolololo i know right.. i hate chem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i'm not good at stuff like this

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

we're looking for a increase in disorder, so that should be a solid going to a liquid or gas, or a liquid going to a gas that rules out D which is hydrogen and oxygen forming water

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

A is sulfur dioxide plus oxygen making sulfur trioxide, which is a solid, so that's the wrong direction as well

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

B has a solid and liquid forming a solid, again, that's an increase in order C has a gas going to two gases. that must be the answer!

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

ah, if you have gas to gas, the side with more moles of gas is the more disordered one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank youuuuuu !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

he is much smarter than me :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i wish i was that smart

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me to

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

I didn't know anything about solving this problem before you asked it! I just did a web search for "reaction positive value S" and read until I found something that made sense. when I was your age, I would have had to flip through the chemistry book until I found something that looked right, you've got it easy :-)

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

took me a few minutes to realize that the "^S" meant delta S, though! I was wondering how exponents were going to come into this problem...
