you need to find the area of the shaded area, and the area of the large rectangle. a randomly chosen point in the large rectangle will be in the shaded area with probability (area of shaded area)/(area of large rectangle)

you can find the area of the shaded area by finding the area of the large rectangle and subtracting the area of the smaller rectangle inside it.

Note that the problem author has craftily included an answer which you will get if you misread the problem and find the probability that the point is in the inner rectangle :-)

16*8-14*5=58 58/128*100=45.3125 so the answer is 45%
