OpenStudy (haseeb96):

what is the polar and non polar? differentiate between that in easy words to understand?

OpenStudy (abb0t):

This might be a difficult concept to understand since I had troubles understanding it when I was first introduced to this concept in chemistry, so I am going to try and explain it the best I can to put it more simply because this is an IMPORTANT concept in chemistry if you decide to continue forward in chemistry. It is basically referring to a separation in electric charge, which consequently leads it to having a "dipole". In otherwords, their electrons are not shared equally. Since each electron has it's own ability to attract electrons either more or less than each other, even when they come together - this is called electronegativity- the ability to attact electrons. On the other hand, when a molecule is NONpolar, it means they share their electrons equally. One example is Water. If you look at the structure of water. it has TWO lone pairs. This makes it polar. The electrons are causing a sort of shift of the hydrogen atoms downward. Since the elctrons are not shared equally. If you look at the structure of methane: CH\(_4\) its nonpolar. All the atoms are shared equally. there are no electrons that push the hydrogen atoms up or down. I hope this makes sense.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

polar is SHARING electrons UNEQUALLY and nonpolar is EQUAL

OpenStudy (haseeb96):

thanks alot
