The carbon atom is sometimes listed as carbon-12 and sometimes as carbon-14. What does this mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. These are two isotopes of the carbon atom. Carbon-12 has 6 neutrons and carbon-14 has 8 neutrons. B. These are two allotropes of the carbon atom. Carbon-12 has 6 neutrons and carbon-14 has 8 neutrons. C. These are two isotopes of the carbon atom. Carbon-12 has 6 protons and carbon-14 has 8 protons. D. These are two allotropes of the carbon atom. Carbon-12 has 6 protons and carbon-14 has 8 protons.

@UnkleRhaukus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it is either A or C

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

Carbon has an atomic number of 6, so it always has 6 protons , however the atomic mass is the sum of the protons + the neutrons,

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

so the number of neutrons in carbon will determine which isotope it is

OpenStudy (abb0t):

genius.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So A?

OpenStudy (unklerhaukus):

yah!

Thanks A Bunch :)
