HELP PLEASE? Give the name and formula of the compound formed from the following elements. (a) iodine and barium name formula (b) sulfur and strontium name formula (c) strontium and fluorine name formula
these are all ionic compounds, write \(cation\) + \(anion\)
what do you mean write cation and anion? like how do I write the name and formula?
for example, the first is "Barium fluoride" barium makes a 2+ cation, and fluorine makes a -1 anion, the formula is \(BaF_2\)
damn it's iodine, but it's the same concept
So Iodine makes 1+?
iodine make a -1 anion
so would the formula be IBa?
no
ok please explain the cation and anion thingy. it really confuses me.
metals make cations (because they are less electronegative (recall the electronegativity trends of the periodic table)), elements on the right side of the periodic table make anions (typically). When you write the name you write the cation first, followed by the anion with the appropriate suffix.
so BaI2?
and the name is Barium diiodine?
the formula is correct, but the name is not. Since barium only makes a 2+ ion, it's redundant to specify the number of iodines because it can only be 2.
so dibarium Iodine?
no, \(BaI_2\)=barium iodide
well umm I typed in BaI2 and it said that is incorrect.
the suffix \(-ide\) is used for anions, but it's not the only one.
thats weird, because it's right look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barium_iodide
ya like it says case sensitive and i did it correctly but BaI2 is somehow incorrect.
i had to put a space. thanks!!!! it sorta makes sense now.
good stuff you go it figured it out. no problem
