need help solving this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[\frac{ 15x ^{8} }{ 24y ^{5} } \div \frac{ 4x ^{4}}{ 8y ^{2} }\]

OpenStudy (secret66):

I don't know, i am sorry :3 (dumb at maths)

@AkashdeepDeb @Mackenzie2013 @cail @bookworm00981 @thomaster

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@phi could you pleasee help me

OpenStudy (phi):

change the divide to a multiply. You can do this if you "flip" the 2nd fraction

OpenStudy (phi):

in other words \[ \frac{ 15x ^{8} }{ 24y ^{5} } \div \frac{ 4x ^{4}}{ 8y ^{2} } = \frac{ 15x ^{8} }{ 24y ^{5} } \cdot \frac{ 8y ^{2} }{ 4x ^{4}} \]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the 4 and 24 cancels out

OpenStudy (phi):

First, do the numbers: \[ \frac{15\cdot 8}{24\cdot 4} \] can you simplify those numbers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (phi):

what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5/4

OpenStudy (phi):

now simplify the x's \[ \frac{x^4}{x^8}\] can you simplify that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes 1/2

OpenStudy (phi):

almost the right idea. remember what x^4 means? x*x*x*x x^8 is x*x*x*x*x*x*x*x so \[ \frac{x^4}{x^8} = \frac{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x}{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x}\] use the idea that \(\frac{x}{x}= 1 \)

OpenStudy (phi):

each x/x is 1 in other words \[ \frac{x^4}{x^8} = \frac{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x}{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x} = \frac{x \cdot x \cdot x \cdot x}{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x }\cdot \frac{1}{x\cdot x \cdot x \cdot x} \]
